More Studio Updates

Sooo...We spent 3 days in the studio with Al Fatz, Paul Wall and Perion. I'm so tired that I can't even think straight. 20 hours a day this week. I guess it's nothing when compared to the STRAIGHT FIRE that we're about to drop as LeBron's theme song.

Al Fatz got a dope hook, Paul dropped a hot 16, Perion has a fire beat. It's mad catchy. Can't wait to drop it, but first mixing then mastering.



This ain't the beat by the way, just a beat we were vibing to.

Wassup folks...I promised that I would give you the inside track on the progress and process of recording LeBron's theme song. Here it is...We made our way into the studio for the first day last night with everybody in attendance in the "A".

We're recording in Atlanta's famous Patchwerk Recording Studio. This place has the only 9000 in Georgia. It's definitely a work of art.

We also had H20: Hip-Hop on Demand ,http://www.hiphopondemand.tv, and their host, Noelle, swing through to do interviews with the entire crew. It was a relatively laid back atmosphere as we all got to parlay together and begin work on the track.





Our folk, David Banner, rolled by the spot too, just to show love...

We've got 3 days of this ahead. I'll keep you posted...

I'm here announcing the official winner of the LeBron 23-23 contest, EternallyBallN. We had to go through the proper procedure to setup the next steps in the process to create LBJ's theme song. The kid laid down a nice beat and then promoted the hell outta himself to win the thing. Big ups!!!

Next steps for us are to get in the studio and record the damn song already. You have no idea what a logistical nightmare this is going to be to get everyone here and ready to go. But, it's happening next week in the A.

I'll be taking some candid pics of the experience and maybe getting some of the big boys to write some quick blogs on the process.

On another note, I have been reading the comments on the blog, I just haven't had too much time to respond. My bad. I'll start responding tonight. I'm just now back at 100% after NBA All-Star in Vegas. 5 days in that city will break any man. Especially with our party at Light at the Bellagio. I could barely stay awake to go to the LeBron & Jay-Z dinner at Tao the next night. I'm standing right next to Beyonce and her sister - didn't care - I needed some sleep. But, ya boy pulled it together and made it happen for the party after the dinner.

NBA Freeflow - Tonight at 10pm est on BET

It's been about a week since I posted last. My bad for that - it's been crazy here getting the BET show ready and getting ready for NBA All-Star 2007 in Las Vegas.

NBA Freeflow airs tonight at 10pm est. Set your DVR's. Big Tigger is on the Voice over. We've got footage of LeBron, Shaq, Shane Battier, Dwight Howard, Dirk and more. Plus, a lot of beats from the LeBron 23-23 Studio Mixer made the final cut. Listen in close to recognize yours and then check for your name in the credits.

The final 3 spots have been produced and are being shipped to the networks today to air this weekend. The spots and tracks are bangers. It totally surprised me that LeBron, Paul Wall, and Al Fatz pretty much agreed that the same tracks were hot without even talking to each other at first.

The spots break online at 11:23pm on Friday night and on TV during NBA All-Star Saturday Night.

I'll get into Vegas on Thursday and will be posted up at the EA NBA Street Homecourt Release Party. Friday it's the Bellagio for the Sprite & LeBron James joint. Saturday & Sunday? No tellin where I'll be. I'll try to update the blog in-between "work meetings"...

The Final 3

LeBron, Paul Wall and Al Fatz all got their selections to me by last Wednesday night around 11:30. After I got back from seeing my Hawks whomp Golden State, we went through the selections and, surprisingly, they all pretty much agreed on the same tracks. So, we do know who made it to the top 3 and will get into the TV spots.

Now - here's a personal apology from Admin. I may not have been as clear as I should have been. We're announcing the Final 3 spots in Las Vegas during All-Star weekend at the LeBron 23-23 party at Light in the Bellagio. At 11:23, (hence the name 23-23), LeBron will be there to personally premeire the spots on broadcast for the first time. Then, we kick off voting that same night and a public vote will determine who gets to go into the studio.

The party is going to be serious. I've personally been to the last 2 All-Star weekends (Houston & Denver) and am more excited about Las Vegas than any of the past ones. When NBA All-Star was in Atlanta, I wasn't working for Coke at the time, so I didn't get to go for free. So, if any of ya'll are going to All-Star in Vegas, holla at me.

My bad for not being more clear on revealing the top 3.

On another note, we still are going to have more opportunities for folks not in the top 3. Legally, we have to wait until you are clear of being voted upon/judged to use your tracks.

NBA Freeflow on BET

I had to hold back on officially announcing this because the contract wasn't finished until last night. NBA Freeflow is a Sprite joint production venture with BET and the NBA for a 30 minute show on how your favorite NBA players get hyped with music. We've got the big names: LeBron, Shaq, Ben Wallace, Stackhouse, Duncan, and more all talking to us about how they get up for their big games.

Why does this matter to you? Because we sent in 14 different beats to be incorporated into the vignettes and the 30 minute show.

Plus, the following folks will have their name and track name in the credits at the end of the 30 minute show.

The judges each got their selections to me last night. I compiled the list around 1am, the agency pulled the mp3s from the Listen Lab 1hr ago, and I'm burning CDs of the Top 23 to have hand delivered to LeBron James on Sunday.

From there, it's up to LeBron, Paul Wall, & Al Fatz. They'll get the top 3 back to me from there. The top 3 get embedded into the TV commercial...Not just just the mix, but your name too.

The LeBron spot premieres during NBA All-Star 2007.

It's that simple...

The Top 100

We pulled the list of the Top 100 vote getters for the LeBron 23-23 contest. We had a call with the 5 judges yesterday (3 from Atlantic Records, 1 from our ad agency, and Paul Wall's manager - T. Farris). They are reviewing the mixes now and are going to have their favorites to me by Saturday.

I'll do the tabulations then get the top 23 over to LeBron, Paul Wall, and Al Fatz to make their decisions on the final 3.

I'll post the Top 100 list later tonight...I gotta go home now...mad tired.

On another tip, I've been reading a lot of the comments about getting mixes in late, reviewing everybody, etc. So I thought I'd respond with a few points from our POV.

1. This contest is about hustle - making a hit theme song for LeBron James. I know a lot of people out there with talent but weren't willing to put in the work necessary to promote themselves. Everyone has heard of selling mixtapes out of the trunk of your car. That's what this contest is. If you can't get people to vote for you, you probably can't get a hit song on the radio.

I've got a stack of CDs on my desk from producers, DJs, even mainstream artists looking to cash in - without putting any work in first....not a good look.

For the people that did get out and promote hard, you probably made the top 100.

2. There are legitimately some people that just heard about the promo late...I feel you. It's not always fair, but we have deadlines to get the music put into the TV commercial and ship it to TNT to air during NBA All-Star 2007. For ya'll, we have some other opportunities to get your beats out. Ones that we can't give to the Top 100 for legal reasons. On the low - we've been in negotiations for a TV show with a Entertainment Television network that starts with a "B".

3. Lastly, we can't listen to every submitted track. I'm too busy, Atlantic Records is too busy, LeBron James is wayyyy to busy trying to win a championship.

I'm not going to be long-winded tonight. It's two hours until submissions cut off for the first phase of the LeBron 23-23 contest. All the professional and amateur producers have had a chance to mix a beat and promote.

A big thanks to everyone that submitted music. We're definitely pleased with the variety and complexity of the tracks we're hearing. We're even impressed with how some of you have creatively promoted yourselves.

It's all been noticed. It gets talked about in the hallways of Coca-Cola and on conference calls with Paul Wall.

We're pulling the top 100 late tonight. Got a conference call tomorrow afternoon with the judges.

It's down to the wire for the LeBron 23-23 contest. If you've got a mix, and you want a chance to be heard by LeBron James, Paul Wall, Al Fatz, Atlantic Records - then submit your mix now.

Hit up your family - moms, pops, cousins that ain't really your cousins - anybody that can click a widget or enter a cap code on the site.

We've confirmed the judging panel for the top 100 mixes. It's high level marketing and A&R from Atlantic Records - I can't drop the names now cause I don't want ya'll beggin for a record deal - but we always roll big at Sprite. We've got Paul Wall's manager, T. Farris. We've got a couple cats from our ad agency - Crispin Porter + Bogusky. If ya'll don't know about getting T&R off of commercials, you need to go back and study - easiest money in the music game.

I'm serious about this competition. Step up your game up for it.

On another note, I see some cats are bootlegging my shoes on the Internet. B@$T@RDS!!! How are you gonna sell my shoes for $850 online!!! It took us 6 months to get those made...Some people are really willing to pay big bucks to be exclusive - when we have 10 pairs sitting in a closet here. LOL
